We saw many cork trees on the ride that had been harvested anywhere from 2010 to this year. When we arrived, we were able to get a brief introduction to the cork industry and observe the further cutting and winnowing of the cork chunks for "quality control".
Once we returned to Evora we wanted to make sure we had a chance to walk around and see the city. Rick Steves had a nice, short walking tour suggestion in his Portugal guide so we took advantage of that (and the warm sunny afternoon) to see the sights.
The 16th century aqueduct that brought Evora their water.
The streets just call out for exploration.
We visited the "Chapel of Bones" - very eerie to be in a space completely surrounded by human bones. The story behind it can be read here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capela_dos_Ossos.
The city center has a this Roman Temple at its core - very lively spot and the backdrop site for many concerts and gatherings in Evora.
Peter sketched a detail of the temple column as we ate chips and drank beer in the plaza :)
We returned to our lovely hotel and ordered light fare to share - decided to give our stomachs a sort of "rest day" from all the fabulous dinners we have enjoyed. Everything is DELICIOUS.
Assorted cheeses, bread, walnuts and divine bowls of tomato jam and pumpkin jam - don't knock it until you have tried it! All washed down with port wine. Peter's favorite type of foods!
Catching up with life back in Minnesota while enjoying the ability to sit outdoors - temperatures in the 70's and still evading the rain that is forecast to arrive this weekend.
Tomorrow we ride to a rural hotel that also raises goats and cork - hope you enjoy riding along!
